Frequently Asked Questions

In this section we provide answers to the most commonly asked questions about physical therapy. We hope this is informative and share it with others. If you do not find what you are looking for, don't hesitate to get in touch.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy helps to improve mobility. Your therapist will work with you to identify the impairments that limit your mobility. Everyone's needs are different, but they may include pain, weakness, stiffness, coordination problems, postural flaws, endurance limitations, or poor balance.

The real benefit of a physical therapist is their ability to identify the problem, and what contributes to it. Then they will develop a plan to specifically address your goals and improve your mobility.

How much training do Physical Therapists have?

Training standards have been increasing in recent years.  The growing body of research and knowledge has placed an increased demand on all health care providers. To meet this demand, a physical therapists' education has included more time understanding research, more clinical training, and a broader understanding of our role as a member of a health care team.  Currently physical therapy programs in the U.S. only offer a clinical doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) as the entry level degree.  This typically means a bachelors degree with heavy prerequisites in the sciences, followed by 3 years of professional graduate training.

Some PT's are grandfathered and practice with bachelor's or master's degrees.  All of the clinicians at Clover Physical Therapy have their DPT.

Will I be sharing time with other patients? No, appointments in our office are exclusive.

Some offices will overlap appointments, causing the therapist to work with multiple patients at once.  You won't have to worry about that at Clover Physical Therapy. We don't double book patients. Your scheduled time belongs to you.

Can I choose where I go for physical therapy? Yes!

Your doctor may have referred you to a specific therapsit or facility. Usually this is because they have had good success or confidence in that referral. Unfortunately, sometimes referrals are made based on insitutional or financial relationships. You always have the right to choose your therapist, and we are happy to work with any provider.

First appointment: What you should bring with you

Ideally, you should come wearing comfortable clothing.  If you have a prescription from your doctor, please bring it on the first day.  We will also need a copy of your insurance card.

Does your health insurance cover payment of costs: We are happy to assist you

Physical therapy is usually covered by your insurance plan.  We accept all of the major insurances, and will look into those that aren't typically carried here in Rochester.

If you have any questions about how your health insurance covers the costs of your treatments, we'd be happy to assist you - just call at (585) 271-1670 or come into our office.

Therapy sessions: Coordinated with your schedule

Our hours are by appointment and can be scheduled based on your individual needs. We offer both morning and evening appointments. On request we can usually see you within 24 hours.

Will my therapist communicate with my doctor? Yes.

Your therapist will send a typed consultation note to your doctor following your first visit and at regular intervals as you progress.  These notes will include information on your condition, expectations, and goals. If you want other providers to receive these notes, simply let us know. We like to partner with your health care team and work to maintain good relationships with all of them.

Do I need a referral? Generally not.

New York state no longer requires a physician's referral to see a physical therapist.  If your care continues beyond 10 visits or 30 days, their are some details to consider which we will help you navigate.

Some insurance companies require a referral or authorization.  If so, we usually arrange these for you.  Call us and we can find out the details and requirements of your insurance coverage.
